Welcome to the new RoketGames!
We're back and hopefully better than before. RoketGames has undergone a huge makeover, not only on the surface, but a large portion of the back-end code has also been rewritten. With this, the new version of RoketGames brings some significant new features, such as:
- As you can tell, a brand new design. The design itself allows for some of the new features we've implemented.
- A much better picture and video viewer for games.
- Users can now have multiple pictures and switch between which ones they want for their avatar. All pictures are displayed on their profile in a similar way screenshots are displayed for games. This functionality replaces user banners.
- A more organised private messaging system. Private messages are now organised into threads, allowing you to easily turn private messages into private conversations.
- A new issues management system which informs you of errors and warnings relating to your game on your game dashboard.
- Brand new file manager. The new version supports:
- Double-clicking on files for download (no longer do you have to make files public to download them).
- Double-clicking on folders for open.
- Making files private again (after making them public).
- New uploading system using Google Gears. This allows for multiple file uploads and an overall smoother experience.
- Uploading to both file management panels.
- The front page has also been redesigned to give users access to many more games while not cluttering up the interface.
- Users now also have profile descriptions, rather than the blogs being the user's main page.
- A new developers tab, allowing developers to easily search help documentation relating to any of the APIs that RoketGames provides.
- The game upload process has been completely redesigned as well, making it easier to upload your games.
- The group system will now be orientated like the user system, as can be seen from the new design. Although many features in this area are still to be implemented, the design allows for blogs and pictures in the same way the new user system does.
- The ratings system has now been changed to focus on an overall rating, rather than the individual ratings system that was in place.
Whew, that's a long list. On top of this, a lot of systems should also been more stable now and have better error detection and handling. However, a few things couldn't be reimplemented in this version due to a lack of time before the deadline. These include:
- Game submissions are temporarily disabled. I'm working as fast as possible to get these operational and they should be up in the next few days.
- Blog addition/editing/removal isn't implemented either yet. I must have forgotten that in my mad rush to get the game submissions working, but don't worry, it'll be back soon.
- Some of the common actions for games (such as viewing achievements) and users (such as adding friends, viewing websites or viewing their games) aren't available yet. These are fairly small things and shouldn't take too long.
- The search feature was going to be completed for this release, but it didn't make it. While it has been rethemed, it still won't return multiple results (although there is a design for the search results).
- The game integration management panel of the game dashboard isn't complete yet. There's a fair amount of work to be done here, but it's release will probably be timed in with the release of Game Integration V2.
- Groups don't have all their features back such as inviting or management; at the moment the groups just have their description pages and the (new) ability for users to comment on them.
I apologise for the lack of some features in this release and I'll try to get them finished as soon as possible. It'd be great if people could also report any bugs they find to jrhodes@roket-enterprises.com.
We hope you enjoy the new features and design - Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to you all :)
Regards, James.
